Finding ATMs for Forex Card in Toronto with 1000CAD withdrawal limit

I just moved to Toronto, and have a forex card locked and loaded. Since I cannot transfer money to my account from forex card, I am looking to withdraw cash from the ATM.
Due to high withdrawal fees, I want to make minimum withdrawals. I want to withdraw around 1500CAD for initial rent payment.
Visited CIBC Bank, but all their machines had limits of 400CAD. So, which ATMs can I try which have withdrawal limits of around 1000CAD?

Best cards/bank accounts/practices for traveling? Things like: no forex-txn fees, no ATM fees, should you convert CAD directly to local currency or should you take USD?

For anyone who travels outside of North American often, do you have any recommendations for how to handle getting money in foreign countries?

Best banking option for Canadian living in Denmark for 2+ years?

Hello PersonalFinanceCanada!
I will be travelling to Denmark for 2+ years on a visiting researcher visa. This means that I will be paid in CAD from my host institution and will not be receiving payment in Danish currency (DKK).
I will be going over 1 month early before my contract begins (Nov 1). Therefore, I am weighing options for how to minimize foreign exchange fees and optimize the exchange rate I am getting. This will be important because I will be furnishing an apartment from scratch and incurring a lot of upfront costs.
Should I simply absorb the exchange rate and foreign exchange fees (2.5%) given by my existing debit/credit cards (Bank of Montreal)? Or, should I look into signing up for something like a KOHO account (1.5%)? Are there other options?
Once I get my visiting researcher visa in early November, I am able to open a Danish bank account and I plan to use Transferwise to move CAD to DKK. Is this the suggested route to minimize extra costs?
Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I will be moving abroad and would need to spend a lot of money until I can set up a bank account there. What is the best way to optimize for a good exchange rate and merchant transaction costs?

More specifically, I'll be moving to the UK soon. Unfortunately, to set up a bank account, I'd need to rent a residence and to rent a residence I'd need to spend my money wisely at a good forex rate. To understand the problem more, I did some google-fu and realized that the solution should account for a few things.
- I need to use a service that is / can be attached to my Indian bank and can provide card banking facilities abroad with at a near-wholesale currency exchange rate. I want to avoid using cash-based transfer services there (eg: like what western union is usually used for).
- The service should also have the lowest possible transaction charges applied. Are there services that provide 0% markup on foreign merchant transactions or ATM withdrawals?
The service again, is just a temporary solution until I can set up a proper account abroad. I did discover that a forex card service can be used (Like Makemytrip's HDFC Prepaid), but I'm a bit nervous on understanding how it this actually works or if there's a hidden catch. I hope I can learn more about this.
This community has been super helpful with me so far, so thank you!

Tokyo itinerary check (Nov 1st - Nov 11th)

• Day 1 (Nov 2nd) - Arrive @ Narita around 2:30 pm. -Do the normal airport stuff. I.E pick up pocket wi-fi, get suica cards, purchase Keisei Skyaccess ticket to Kuramae Station then transfer to Oedo Line (we are staying by the Tokyo Dome). -Get to hotel (The B Suidobashi) and drop off luggage. Take a stroll down to the 7-11 down the street and grab something to eat and take out some cash from the ATM (My bank charges a 3% foreign transaction fee. Does that sound fair compared to other banks?). -I am going to assume by this time it will be some where around 6 or 7 pm so maybe just walk down by the Kanda River and check out Motomachi park (Do parks usually have a closing time?). -Depending how we feel stop back at 7-11 and grab some random snacks before heading back to the hotel for some shut eye.
Day 2 (Nov 3rd) - I see that today will be Culture day in Tokyo. Has anyone been here on this day with any specific advice? - We plan on spending this day mostly around Harajuku/Shibuya. - Probably start the day wandering around Takeshita street. Got to make sure we grab a crepe at Angel’s Heart. (I actually heard this place closed down. Is this true?) - Grab some street food and head over to Owl Village café to visit some owls. - Head over to Meiji Jingu shrine in Yogoi park (Remember left to shrine at fork). On this day we can watch Yabusame. It starts at 1:00 pm. (Any idea on how long an activity/show like this last?) - Head down to scramble and relax with the view. I was told Starbucks is the best vantage point, any other suggestions? - See Hachiko statue. - Grab some kind of dinner some place. - Maybe go to a club. Obviously, we wouldn’t attempt to go to all of these in one night, but I heard good things about Vision, Womb, Atom, Harlem, Club Asia, and Camelot. I know they are all a bit different but are any of these more or less friendly with tourist than others? - I’d assume we would be pooped after all of this, so we would make our way back to the hotel at this point.
Day 3 (Nov 4th) - We would still want to explore more of Shibuya, so we would probably end up back this way for a portion of the day. - Eat some breakfast and head on down to Center-gai. - Check out the Mega Don Quijote. - Go to Loft. - Explore Village Vanguard. - Check out the view on top of the Hikarie building. - Head to the Food show in Shibuya station. - Make our way up to Shinjuku next. - Head to the metropolitan building for some views. - Visit the Samurai Museum - Once it starts to get dark we would like to head to the Godzilla on top of Toho Cinemas to watch the little show it does. - Finish the night exploring before heading back to our hotel.
Day 4 (Nov 5th) - Start day heading to Gotokuji temple. - Do some thrifting and exploring in Shimokitazawa. (Any personal experience with Japanese vintage cloth shopping would be appreciated. We heard that a lot of the stores in this area sell American style vintage clothing over Japanese.) - Head out to Gyoen park and explore more of the area. - Check out the Min-on Music museum. - Mannenyu Onsen (we have tattoos and heard this is a decent accommodating onsen after doing some research. Any other suggestions are welcome.) - Maybe head up to Ikebukuro to grab some dinner and visit Sunshine city. - Go back to our hotel.
Day 5 (Not 6th) - Hie shrine in the morning. - Hinokicho park - Tokyo tower. (maybe) - Zojoji Temple. - Todoroki Ravine Park. - Go to Jiygaoka. - Explore Roppongi area and see Roppongi Hills at night. (Do they still do the illuminated streets and such?)
Day 6 (Nov 7th) - Today will start off in Kichijoji. - Visit Inokashira park. - Explore the area. - Explore Nakano Broadway. - Yayoi Kusama Museum. - Sky circus observation deck. - Go to Sunshine Aquarium. (We hear mix things about this aquarium as far as the welfare of the animals go. How bad is it?) -Round one in Ikebukuro. - Call it a night.
Day 7 (Nov 8th) - Go to Senso-ji bright and early. - Explore the area and head to Asakusa tourist center to get a nice view. - Go to Sky tree and explore the area. - Head to Sumida park to relax and enjoy the river. - Time to head to Akihabara. - Explore the area. - Go to HEY and play some video games. - Make sure we visit the weird vending machine corner
Day 8 (Nov 9th) - This day is all Odaiba. - Start off by going to Planets (is it advised not to go since it will be cold out and I know you have to get your legs wet? Is Borderless the better choice due to the season?) - Maricar. - Check out the Gundam statue and explore the area. - Legoland discovery center. - Diver city. - Check out the trick art museum. - Venus fort. - Toyota Mega web. - National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation.
Day 9 (Nov 10th) - Visit Tsukiji outer market. - See Hayao Miyazaki's NTV clock - Check out the Nakagin Capsule tower. - Head to Nissan crossing. - Make our way to Tokyo station and explore. - Try to pick up any last-minute souvenirs.
Day 10 (Nov 11th) - Out flight departs at 11:30 from Narita so we won’t have a bunch of time to do much this day I am guessing. - Probably just grab some breakfast and make our way to the airport and get there by about 8 A.M. Is that too early or not enough time? Never flown out of here obviously and if it’s anything like my local airport 3 and a half hours is probably just about the right amount of time to arrive prior to your flight.
• So that is my rough game plan. We have certain food places we want to check out and such, I just didn’t list them because who knows what we may be in the mood for that day. Please help me critique our itinerary. We have not bought any tickets for anything yet because I wanted to see what the experienced people had to say about it and help us rearrange days if we need to.
• I did have some questions also if anyone can help: - Are there any specific stores that sell okay luggage for us to buy while in Tokyo to send our souvenirs and gifts back in? I saw that most people will suggest Donki and such, but they tend to be overpriced. - We would like to squeeze visiting Yanaka Cemetery as well, but I wasn’t sure where to put in our itinerary that made logistical sense. Any help here would be nice. - We enjoy parks and outdoor things and good food. Not super crazy into anima or stuff but we do enjoy video games a lot. I love anything to do with cars so any suggestions there are appreciated as well. Thank you for all your help and I look forward to any advice and suggestions you all have!

Withdrawing USD Funds from Philippine-Based Paypal Account Using TransferWise Borderless Account

This is a response to u/sgicruz*'s post:* Best way to receive USD payment into a USD savings account? I created a post since this is a bit long comparison.
If you are transferring large amounts of USD from Paypal (i.e. >USD 2,000 at a time), you are forced by Paypal to withdraw in PHP, since you cannot withdraw USD directly to Philippine-based USD accounts. Instead, you can use the TransferWise Borderless Account. The Borderless Account allows you to hold multiple currencies on the account, and also provides USD US Bank Account details (also GBP, Euro, AUD, NZD) which can receive funds via local ACH (automated clearing house). Paypal can withdraw USD funds via US ACH. (There is a verification step before being assigned bank account details: see footnote at the bottom of my post)*
For comparison, below are three scenarios:
  1. Paypal (USD) -> Local PHP Savings Account (PHP)
  2. Paypal (USD) -> TransferWise Borderless Account -> BDO USD Savings Account (USD)
  3. Paypal (USD) -> TransferWise Borderless Account -> Local PHP Savings Account (PHP)
---------------------------
1. Paypal -> (Withdraw to PHP Bank Account) -> Local PHP Savings Account
Associated fees (sample computation for USD 2,000):
Total fees: PHP 200 (for USD 2,000 sample computation)
(Note: if you use GCash, I think total fee is always PHP 0, subject to wallet and transaction limits)
Exchange Rate (sample for May 8, 2020): 1 USD => PHP 48.9414
Net PHP received thru bank: PHP 97,682.70 (BDO) or PHP 97,882.70 (GCash)
Paypal's PHP-USD buy/sell spread is horrendous at around ~3.0-3.5% compared to the mid-market rate. But this is still a valid option if (1) you are withdrawing small amounts, or (2) you need instant access to cash.
---------------------------
2. Paypal -> (Withdraw to US Bank Account) -> TransferWise Borderless Account -> (Send USD via SWIFT) -> BDO USD Savings Account
Associated fees (sample computation for USD 2,000):
Total fees: 59.60 USD
Net USD received thru bank: USD 1940.40
If your ultimate goal is to get the funds in PHP, we can try exchanging the USD to PHP via BDO
Exchange Rate (sample for May 8, 2020): 1 USD => PHP 50.0000 (BDO USD Buy rates)
Net PHP received thru bank: PHP 97,020.00
There are a lot of fixed fees, so this will only be economical for large amounts of USD (probably >USD 3,000). In addition, BDO's PHP-USD buy/sell spread is around ~0.5-1.0% compared to the mid-market rate.
Paypal withdrawal to US bank account takes around 1-2 banking days, while SWIFT transfers take around 1-5 banking days.
---------------------------
An alternative is to send PHP directly from TransferWise. This is cheaper than Paypal or even the USD route described above. This is because TransferWise's exchange rate uses the mid-market rate, and they have transparent fees. In addition, TransferWise -> Local PHP Savings Account settles in minutes, as opposed to the SWIFT USD transfer above (which can take anywhere from 2-5 banking days).
3. Paypal -> (Withdraw to US Bank Account) -> TransferWise Borderless Account -> (Send PHP via ACH [this means Bancnet]) -> Local PHP Savings Account
Associated fees (sample computation for USD 2,000):
Total fees: USD 47.01
Net USD for conversion: USD 1952.99
Exchange Rate (sample for May 8, 2020): 1 USD => 50.4800 PHP
Net PHP received thru bank: PHP 98,586.93
Paypal withdrawal to US bank account takes around 1-2 banking days, while TransferWise USD-PHP ACH (Bancnet) settles in minutes.
---------------------------
*To receive your own USD bank account details, you're required to "Add Money" at least GBP 20 or its equivalent (maybe USD 25). This is their verification requirement. I recommend adding money using Visa/Mastercard Debit Card: TransferWise has around 4.5% fees for the Debit Card Add Money option, so it's going to cost around ~PHP 60 in fees. I recommend using CIMB ATM card if you have, since they currently (as of May 8, 2020) do not charge forex conversion fees. If not, any Visa/Mastercard debit card will do (including BDO Visa ATM cards).
---------------------------
TLDR;
For relatively small amounts, withdraw directly from Paypal to PHP bank account. Best choice is Paypal -> GCash (no inward remittance fee).
For larger amounts, withdraw USD from Paypal to TransferWise Borderless Account, then send PHP via ACH (Bancnet) to Philippine PHP Savings account.
But if you want to keep the amount as USD: withdraw USD from Paypal to TransferWise Borderless Account, then send USD via SWIFT to Philippine USD Savings account.

STACK Mastercard while travelling vs carrying cash

So the STACK Mastercard has a 0% foreign exchange fee and no ATM withdrawal fee and reasonable daily limits and quick, easy reload via interact e-transfers.
For my last trip to Thailand I carried cash and exchanged it at stalls. I found it kind of perplexing carrying around that much cash, but managed. I wasn't left with any unnecessary Baht and just deposited the leftover cash into my bank at home. It was a little inconvenient finding stalls, but I also used my regular debit card at ATMs and didn't notice too much of an upcharge for when I needed additional cash.
For an upcoming trip to Vietnam, I was wondering if this sounds like a reasonable solution, or if I'm missing something that would totally screw me over:
Deposit all the cash onto the STACK card (<$1500) and withdraw it at ATMs while travelling.
If I was carrying cash and wanting to get the best rate, I'd have to go to gold/jewellery stores which aren't uncommon but not as easily found as things like SuperRich in Thailand.
Has anyone used a similar method while travelling?
I just feel like it seems too easy and there's a horrible catch I'm just not seeing that will cost me >$100 in fees.

What's the ideal banking setup for someone that travels out of Canada 80% of the year?

Hi, I work remotely and am only in Canada around Christmas for a month or so.
I currently just have a Tangerine account which works but the huge con is that the debit card is hardly accepted anywhere abroad (ATMs work but nothing else).
The ATM fees really add up as well.
The credit card is great, happy to keep that, but I would really like a debit card that I can use in stores abroad.
Is there another banking setup that would be most beneficial for someone like me? Maybe a credit card with better foreign exchange rates, debit card with lower withdrawal fees, etc?
Willing to pay if it is absolutely worth it, but I do love not paying for Tangerine right now.

Money when travelling in Europe

I’m travelling on my own to Europe this summer (going to places that require euros and Swiss francs) and was wondering what is the best way to carry your money? Should I keep cash on me, (if so is it better to convert my money here or there) or just use my debit/credit card, I heard something about a travel credit card too? I’m just starting my research so any advice would be helpful!

Where to exchange money?

Hey there! I am heading to Japan for holidays and need to exchange some money. As Japan is quite expensive I will need to exchange quite a bit of money, so I am wondering where the best rates are?
Hoping to get a good exchange rate, but also low commission. In other countries I avoided going to the bank as they usually have higher rates. I am with NAB by the way.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
